Your local guide will greet you at your hotel, train station, or airport in Beijing, holding a “Your Way Holiday” sign to ensure a smooth and welcoming start to your journey. As with all our tours, we’re here to personalize the experience—whether you want to start a bit later, spend more time at a particular site, or make a spontaneous detour, your guide will adapt the plan to suit your pace and interests. Our goal is to help you explore Beijing not just as a tourist, but as a guest immersed in the local rhythm of life. With comfort and cultural depth in mind, we begin a full day of discovery across China’s vibrant capital.
Your first stop is the majestic Forbidden City, once home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. As you walk through Tiananmen Gate into the sprawling palace complex, you’ll be surrounded by towering red walls, golden rooftops, and intricately painted eaves that echo the height of imperial architecture. Your guide will share fascinating stories of palace ceremonies, political intrigue, and the daily lives of emperors, concubines, eunuchs, and scholars who once filled these historic halls. You’ll visit symbolic sites such as the Hall of Supreme Harmony and the Palace of Tranquil Longevity, while also uncovering lesser-known spots like hidden courtyards and curated museum galleries. The deeper you explore, the more you'll appreciate the sophisticated urban planning and Confucian symbolism built into every stone. This immersive visit offers a vivid glimpse into China's dynastic power and cultural refinement.
Next, you’ll escape the city’s bustle with a visit to the serene Summer Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its harmonious integration of nature and imperial design. Once the lakeside retreat of emperors and empress dowagers, the palace grounds stretch over 700 acres of pavilions, gardens, and hills. As you stroll along the willow-lined paths and cross intricately carved bridges, your guide will explain how this space was used for relaxation, politics, and celebration. You’ll admire architectural gems like the Tower of Buddhist Incense and walk through the painted Long Corridor, each beam of which is decorated with distinct and colorful scenes from classical Chinese tales. During warmer months, you may enjoy a boat ride on Kunming Lake, drifting past the stone boat and Longevity Hill, or catch a performance of traditional music and opera in the open-air theater. It's a journey into the leisure-filled world of the Qing elite.
For lunch, your guide will lead you to a time-honored local restaurant serving authentic Beijing-style cuisine in a welcoming and comfortable setting. This is more than just a meal—it’s a curated tasting experience designed to introduce you to the capital's diverse flavors. Sample classic dishes such as dry-fried green beans with minced garlic, shredded pork with Beijing-style sweet bean sauce, or crispy eggplant glazed in vinegar. Depending on the season and your dietary needs, your guide may also recommend warming hotpots, light summer salads, or traditional soups made from seasonal vegetables. Vegetarian, vegan, or halal options are easily arranged. While you dine, your guide may share interesting stories about the origins of each dish, the symbolism of ingredients, and local eating customs like round-table sharing and toasting with tea. It’s a chance to eat like a true Beijinger, surrounded by flavors locals cherish.
In the afternoon, explore the sacred grounds of the Temple of Heaven, a Ming-era religious complex where emperors performed rituals to secure heavenly favor and ensure abundant harvests. As you approach the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, its triple-eaved blue roof gleaming in the sunlight, your guide will describe the precise symmetry and spiritual meaning embedded in the temple’s design. The Circular Mound Altar, where rites were conducted under open sky, showcases the ancient belief in cosmic harmony. You’ll also visit the Echo Wall, where whispers travel across great distances—a marvel of acoustic engineering centuries ahead of its time. Beyond the architecture, the surrounding park is alive with locals dancing, singing, practicing calligraphy, or playing traditional instruments. These daily activities give you a heartwarming look at how historic spaces continue to serve as gathering points for modern community life in Beijing.
Conclude your day with a visit to Qianmen Street, one of Beijing’s oldest and most atmospheric commercial avenues, located just south of Tiananmen Square. This bustling pedestrian street has been a center of trade and culture for centuries, and today it has been thoughtfully restored to reflect both its historical charm and modern vibrancy. Walk past facades inspired by Qing Dynasty architecture, with their grey brick exteriors, wooden balconies, and traditional hanging lanterns. Step into iconic shops like Tongrentang for herbal medicine or Neiliansheng for handmade cloth shoes, while also exploring new boutiques offering silk scarves, enamel jewelry, and artisanal crafts. If you’re hungry for a snack, your guide can help you try local street food such as jianbing (savory crepes), tanghulu (candied hawthorn skewers), or steaming baozi from century-old vendors. Whether shopping, snacking, or simply soaking up the ambiance, Qianmen is a delightful way to connect with Beijing’s living history.
After the tour, your guide will escort you back to your hotel in comfort, offering suggestions for dinner or evening activities if you’d like to explore more. We’re always available to make adjustments to your upcoming itinerary based on your preferences, ensuring that each day of your Beijing to Shanghai tour feels personalized and stress-free. Let us know if there’s anything more you’d like to see or try—we’re here to help you truly travel like a local.
Your first destination is the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, a well-preserved and less crowded part of the wall known for its spectacular mountain views and restored watchtowers. As you ascend by cable car or chairlift (or hike, if you’re feeling adventurous), you’ll find yourself standing atop a centuries-old structure that once served as a vital defense line against invasions. Your guide will walk with you along the winding stone path, stopping to explain the wall’s history, construction techniques, and strategic importance during the Ming Dynasty. With pine-covered hills rolling into the distance and the wall snaking across ridgelines, this is a perfect spot for panoramic photos and quiet reflection. Whether you walk a short section or go further to reach more remote towers, the experience is awe-inspiring and unforgettable.
After your Great Wall adventure, your guide will take you to a traditional countryside restaurant near Mutianyu, offering a very different flavor from yesterday’s city lunch. Here, you can enjoy rustic dishes prepared with fresh local ingredients—popular choices include stir-fried mountain greens, free-range chicken with ginger, braised tofu in clay pots, and handmade corn pancakes. If you’re curious, you can even sample local specialties like walnut-glazed yams or millet porridge, a staple in northern rural homes. The relaxed atmosphere and authentic setting give you a chance to experience rural Beijing’s food culture, far from the hustle of urban life. Your guide will help explain ingredients and flavors, ensuring a warm and satisfying meal tailored to your taste.
After lunch, return to the city to visit the world-famous Bird’s Nest (National Stadium), a landmark of Beijing’s 2008 Olympic Games. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the stadium’s striking steel lattice exterior resembles a bird’s nest and represents a bold fusion of modern architecture with symbolic meaning. Your guide will share stories of how this space hosted grand opening ceremonies and world-record-breaking moments that brought China to the global stage. If open for interior access, you can explore the stands and field, imagining the roar of thousands of spectators. Around the stadium, you’ll find art installations, Olympic statues, and photo spots ideal for capturing this modern side of Beijing.
Right nearby is the equally stunning Water Cube (National Aquatics Center), known for its bubble-like blue façade. This innovative structure hosted swimming and diving events during the Olympics and has since been transformed into a public recreation and water park facility. From the outside, it glows beautifully in natural light, especially around sunset. Your guide will explain the building’s environmentally friendly design and the significance of water in Chinese symbolism. Together with the Bird’s Nest, the Water Cube represents China’s blend of modern ambition and artistic vision. Whether you want to go inside or just enjoy the impressive exterior, this stop offers a fresh contrast to the imperial sites visited the day before.
After the final stop, your guide will escort you back to your hotel in Beijing. Whether you plan to rest for the evening or head out for some independent exploration, we’ll ensure you return safely and comfortably. All necessary arrangements for the following day will be clearly communicated, making sure your overall journey remains smooth, flexible, and worry-free.
This morning, you will make your to the train station in Beijing and board the high-speed bullet train bound for Shanghai. The journey takes approximately 4.5 hours, offering a smooth and comfortable ride as you travel at speeds of over 300 km/h. From your seat, you’ll be able to enjoy scenic views of lush farmlands, winding rivers, and growing urban areas. Spacious seating and quiet surroundings ensure that your trip is both relaxing and enjoyable. Upon your arrival in Shanghai, your local guide from Your Way Holiday will be waiting for you at the station exit, holding a sign with the 'Your Way Holiday' logo. With a warm welcome, your guide will help you begin your Shanghai adventure, making sure everything is seamless from the start.
Before sightseeing, enjoy a refreshing local Shanghai-style lunch at a charming restaurant selected for its authentic flavors and comfortable ambiance. This meal will introduce you to the subtle sweetness and refined texture of Jiangnan cuisine, which emphasizes fresh ingredients and balanced flavors. Signature dishes may include steamed fish with soy sauce, stir-fried river shrimp, braised wheat gluten with mushrooms, or savory crab soup dumplings. For dessert, you might try sweet glutinous rice cakes or red bean paste-filled pastries. Compared to the bold northern flavors you tasted in Beijing, this meal features lighter seasoning and delicate preparation. Whether you’re craving vegetarian dishes or curious to try seasonal specialties, your guide will ensure the meal suits your preferences, explaining local food culture, table etiquette, and dining customs unique to the region. The relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant also offers a peaceful break from the city’s hustle and bustle, allowing you to savor each bite and learn more about Shanghai’s culinary heritage.
After lunch, take a leisurely stroll along Nanjing Road, Shanghai’s most famous commercial street. Stretching from People’s Square to the Bund, this vibrant pedestrian avenue is packed with a dynamic mix of old department stores, designer boutiques, nostalgic snack shops, and international brands. As you walk beneath art deco facades and neon signage, your guide will point out historic buildings and share how the street evolved from a colonial-era trade route into a modern shopping mecca. Stop for a taste of popular local treats like fried dough twists, sweet pastries, or almond tofu from century-old vendors. This lively stretch offers a window into Shanghai’s consumer culture—both past and present—set against the hum of street musicians, colorful billboards, and the energy of people going about their daily shopping. The blend of old and new creates a vibrant atmosphere that truly captures the essence of modern Shanghai. Whether you’re browsing for souvenirs, enjoying a coffee in a local café, or simply taking in the sights, Nanjing Road is a must-see part of the city.
As the afternoon turns to evening, make your way to The Bund, Shanghai’s most iconic waterfront. Here, along the Huangpu River, you’ll find an extraordinary architectural contrast: on one side, historic buildings from the early 1900s reflect Shanghai’s colonial past with Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles; on the opposite bank, the futuristic skyline of Pudong glows with modern skyscrapers like the Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Your guide will help you identify each landmark and explain the city’s dramatic transformation over the last century, from its role as a global financial hub to its rise as a modern metropolis. Whether you’re snapping photos of the skyline, enjoying a quiet riverside moment, or just soaking in the city lights, the Bund offers a stunning finale to your first day in Shanghai. The juxtaposition of old and new, tradition and innovation, makes this one of the most memorable views in the world. It's the perfect spot to reflect on your journey and appreciate Shanghai's unique charm.
After the tour, your guide will escort you back to your hotel. We’ll ensure you return safely and comfortably, so you can relax and unwind after a fulfilling day of exploration. If you need help confirming any next-day arrangements or would like tips for a quiet evening walk or nearby convenience stores, your guide will gladly assist before bidding farewell.
Start your day with a visit to Yuyuan Garden & Bazaar, a peaceful haven in the heart of the city that provides a glimpse into Shanghai’s rich cultural heritage. The garden, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, is a masterpiece of classical Chinese landscaping. With intricate rockeries, serene ponds, lush foliage, and traditional pavilions, the garden offers an escape from the city’s fast pace. Your guide will explain the design elements, like the symbolism behind the rock formations and the purpose of the various structures within the garden, reflecting the Chinese philosophy of balance and harmony. After you’ve explored the tranquil garden, wander through the nearby Yuyuan Bazaar, a lively market filled with traditional crafts, local snacks, and souvenir shops. Here, you can purchase everything from hand-painted ceramics to tea sets and silk scarves, perfect for taking a piece of Shanghai home with you. As you stroll, take in the bustling atmosphere and the colorful architecture, blending the old with the new in this vibrant district.
Next, head over to the Old French Concession, an area rich in history and culture, known for its leafy streets, charming colonial architecture, and laid-back atmosphere. This district was once home to Shanghai’s French expatriates and is still full of old European-style buildings, boutiques, and leafy parks. Walking through the tree-lined streets, you’ll encounter a peaceful yet vibrant setting with a unique blend of French and Chinese influences. Your guide will share stories about Shanghai’s colonial past, the area’s cultural significance, and how it became a key part of the city’s development during the 19th and 20th centuries. Along the way, stop by charming cafes, boutique shops, and local galleries, all showcasing the district's artistic and cultural diversity. This area is perfect for those who love a more relaxed, bohemian vibe, offering a quieter side of Shanghai away from the crowds. Whether you’re enjoying a cup of coffee at a local café or browsing through one of the boutique shops, the Old French Concession offers a perfect glimpse into the cosmopolitan past and modern-day charm of Shanghai.
For lunch, enjoy a special Shanghai-style meal at a local restaurant known for its authentic flavors and welcoming ambiance. Unlike previous meals, this lunch offers dishes that represent the flavors of Shanghai’s local cuisine—delicate yet savory. Signature dishes might include wonton soup, stir-fried crab with garlic, braised pork belly in soy sauce, or dongpo pork. The restaurant prides itself on fresh ingredients and uses traditional techniques to bring out the rich flavors that are characteristic of Shanghainese food. Your guide will share insight into the history of these dishes, discussing how they reflect the region’s agricultural heritage and the influence of local river and sea resources. The meal will be light yet satisfying, with plenty of options for those who prefer vegetarian or halal choices. Alongside your meal, you’ll have the chance to learn about the unique customs surrounding Shanghai dining, from the tea-drinking rituals to the art of balancing flavors, giving you a deeper understanding of the city’s culinary traditions.
After lunch, make your way to Tianzifang, a popular artistic district nestled within the old lanes of the former French Concession. This area is a vibrant mix of narrow alleys, traditional architecture, and creative workshops, offering an eclectic blend of modern art, handmade crafts, and local boutiques. As you walk through Tianzifang, you’ll discover a variety of art galleries, quirky souvenir shops, and cozy cafes, all housed in charming, restored Shikumen houses that evoke old Shanghai. Your guide will walk you through the best spots, pointing out unique art pieces, showcasing local designers, and introducing you to the creative vibe of this hidden gem in the heart of the city. Tianzifang is a great place to find one-of-a-kind souvenirs or simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon stroll. Whether you’re interested in contemporary Chinese art or just want to explore the narrow lanes lined with quirky shops and galleries, this district offers a delightful combination of Shanghai’s past and present.
Next, visit the Jade Buddha Temple, one of the city’s most iconic Buddhist landmarks. The temple houses two stunning jade Buddha statues—one seated and one reclining—which were brought to Shanghai from Myanmar in the late 19th century. The peaceful temple, with its golden roof and tranquil courtyards, offers visitors a serene escape from the bustling city. As you walk through the temple’s halls, your guide will explain the significance of jade in Chinese culture and its association with purity and virtue. You will also learn about the temple’s role in local Buddhist practices and its importance to the Shanghai community. The atmosphere inside the temple is calm and meditative, and the scent of incense fills the air as worshippers offer their prayers. The contrast between the serene temple grounds and the urban landscape just outside makes this visit a unique and spiritual experience.
Afterward, head to the Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world. Standing at 632 meters, the tower’s observation deck offers panoramic views of the city’s iconic skyline, from the historic Bund to the modern skyscrapers of Pudong. As you ascend to the top, take in the view of Shanghai’s vibrant skyline, a beautiful blend of old colonial buildings and cutting-edge modern architecture. Your guide will provide insights into the city’s transformation and the engineering marvel behind the Shanghai Tower, which is designed to withstand extreme weather and earthquakes. This was my first time in China and I’m so glad I chose this tour. Everything was super organized, and the bullet train ride was smooth and scenic. I especially enjoyed the walk along the Bund and seeing the Jade Buddha Temple. Big thanks to both guides!
I loved every moment of this tour! The Forbidden City was breathtaking, and riding the bullet train to Shanghai was such a cool experience. Our guides were kind and knowledgeable, and the food—wow. I’d never tried anything like those dumplings in Shanghai. Would absolutely recommend it!
